About Biochar
Biochar is primarily used as a soil amendment to improve soil functions and reduce emissions from biomass that would otherwise naturally degrade to greenhouse gases. The characteristics of biochar are influenced mainly by the preparation temperature and feedstock. Higher pyrolysis temperatures often result in increased surface area and carbonized fraction of biochar, which leads to high absorption capability for pollutants. Biochars derived from various source materials show different surface area, porosity, and functional group properties.
Biochar has a significant effect on soil sustainable fertility because it can improve soil organisms, soil water retention, soil aggregation and aeration, reduce acidity, enhance nutrient retention and availability, and abate the bioavailability of some detrimental substances, such as heavy metals, pesticide residues, and organic contaminants. Biochar provides a unique opportunity to improve soil fertility and nutrient-use efficiency using locally available and renewable materials in a sustainable way. The adoption of biochar management does not require new resources; it is a more efficient and environmentally conscious use of existing resources.
What Is In The Wakefield KickStart BioChar
Wakefield KickStart has most of the same characteristics as biochar obtained from typical biochar feedstocks, like wood chips or waste crops, with the added benefit of a higher concentration of inorganic matter. Specifically, its availability of N and P.
With Wakefield KickStart charged biochar present in the soil mixture, its contribution to the physical nature of the system may significantly improve:
- texture, structure, porosity, and consistency of the soil
- pore-size distribution
- particle-size distribution
- density and packing
- pH, electrical conductibility
- nutrient availability
- water retention
Application Rate
For flowers and pots consider a maximum of 20% by volume.
Lawns will need at least 1 quart of KickStart for every 10 square feet top dressed.
Vegetable gardens are best with 10-20% KickStart by volume in the top 4″ of soil.
