How To Use It
Gardens and Flower Beds
It is recommended that the top 4″ of your raised bed garden uses the Wakefield Biochar Planting Mix. The remaining depth of your raised bed should continue with compost and topsoil amendments. The 1 gallon size is great for some patching of areas you didn’t cover with a biochar mix or some annual maintenance in areas you want to improve the biochar content of your soil. We have the mix setup to make sure you have the best combination of soil, compost and biochar. Our 4″ minimum will make sure the seeds you plant will benefit as they sprout and their roots become established.
The 1 gallon size is perfect for flower pots and small planters where you just need enough to get a few seedling going.
How does biochar work for my yard or garden?
Biochar is basically a charcoal. But not all charcoal is biochar so don’t start dumping your fireplace ashes into your garden. The way biochar is manufactured it creates a high carbon level (97+% of Wakefield Biochar is carbon) and it is incredibly porous. All of those pours help retain water and provide a cozy home for micro-organisms to grow and survive off of the nutrients in the soil. Their interactions are a natural way to get nitrogen and other important elements back into the roots. As the bacteria thrive so does the natural processes that make your plants grow. (Insert the Circle of Life reference). Studies have also shown that the benefits of biochar also include reducing the possibility of disease in your soil.
