Why purchase a 1 quart bag of Biochar?
One quart is best for a planter box or small area of gardening. A good guideline is to make the biochar equal ~5-10% of the total soil content in the area of application. Consider using a bag in any of these projects:
- Flower pots
- Flower beds and bushes around the house
- Patching the lawn that needs reseeding
- Apply to the root area of a tree that you want to plant in the yard
- Add to existing compost pile to speed up the composting process and reduce odors. Biochar is an amazing filter!
- FYI… Not that this has anything to do with plants but you can also use about 2 cups of biochar in your cat litter and it will take away most all of the odor.
Wakefield Biochar Soil Conditioner is approved by the USDA as Certified Biobased Product. It is manufactured and shipped out with the greatest care for a consistent particle size and with low dust! With 1 quart you will receive farm tested and farmer approved biochar for your garden.
Biochar is manufactured specifically to help with soil health. The better the soil the healthier the vegetables in your garden and the flowers in your beds. The small pores within biochar actually retain water and absorb nitrogen to help keep the good micro-organisms in your soil healthy. That, in turn, builds a healthy organic ecosystem for your soil to make sure plant roots get the nutrients and water they need.
The small pieces of biochar are made of carbon from trees. These trees would’ve normally gone to waste and decayed allowing carbon to release into the atmosphere as CO2. By creating biochar we are putting carbon back into the soil where it can help our world instead of add to the global warming discussion.
How To Use Biochar In Different Areas Of Your Yard
IMPORTANT -Prepare your soil!
Apply to ~5-10% of the soil with biochar. Pure biochar like the Wakefield Biochar Soil Conditioner needs to be mixed with organic material and water before it can fully benefit your soil. We recommend you mix it with the good top soil, compost or peat moss for a few days before planting. Please try to water the ground a few times if possible.
Biochar is not intended to be used solely as a soil substitute.
An alternative would be to apply a 50/50 mix of biochar and organic compost to the planting area. This new mix will work its way into the existing soil.
How does biochar make a difference?
Many people look at biochar and think it is exactly what you would find in an outdoor fire pit but it truly is different. Biochar is manufactured to specifically support soil health. It has a high carbon level (97+% carbon) and it is incredibly porous. All of those pores help retain water and reduce the need for watering. The micro-organisms and bacteria in the soil thrive in this environment and support the development of a healthy root system for your plants.
